Ocean View Stables understands the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of our nation’s military veterans.

Co-owner, Zachary Leyden, is a war veteran who, after returning from service in Afghanistan, faced his own battles on home soil. As he grappled with the realities of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), he rediscovered a source of healing – horses.

In the company of these noble animals, Zachary found solace, connection, and therapy. The quiet strength of the horses, their unwavering loyalty, and their intuitive response to human emotions helped him navigate his journey to recovery. The transformation was profound and life-affirming. It was a kind of therapy that transcended words – a healing bond formed in the tranquility of the stables and the freedom of the open trail.

Having experienced the therapeutic wonders of horsemanship first-hand, he made a decision. He wanted to extend this opportunity to his brothers and sisters who had also served. And so, the Veterans Ride Free program was born.

At Ocean View Stables, all veterans ride for free. It is their way of giving back to those who have given so much for our country.

Unconscious bias in the workplace must be addressed in the moment. Left unheeded, the detrimental compounding effects not only damage the victim, but perpetuate the problem for others and drastically reduce team productivity and effectiveness. When staff members have the right skills to navigate inevitable workplace bias, it removes tension, builds trust and cohesion, and drives high-performing winning teams.

When a staff member falls victim to a bias-related incident, utilizing the simple question, “I don’t understand?” provides a gateway for non-confrontational dialogue. The question isn’t accusatory, aggressive, or petulant, yet it cuts to the core of the problem and unearths the issue at hand. It gives the perpetrator the benefit of the doubt. Simultaneously, the victim asking the question can wield a level of control regardless of the perpetrator’s seniority. Because the line of enquiry is developmental, non-accusatory, dispassionate, and impartial, it allows the unconscious bias infraction to be discussed and resolved collaboratively.
